Mini heaters: small, cheap, and often misunderstood
The short answer
A mini heater can be brilliant value or a complete waste of £20. The difference is almost entirely down to power output and whether you are trying to warm a person or a room.
Two very different products
Personal heaters of 200 W to 600 W are designed to keep your hands, feet or desk area warm. They cannot raise the temperature of a whole room and are not meant to. Compact room heaters of roughly 800 W to 1,500 W are small in size but genuine room heaters — the ceramic plug-in category most people actually want when they search for a mini heater.
How to tell which you are looking at
- Check the wattage, not the photo. Under about 700 W, treat it as a personal heater.
- Look for a thermostat. Gadget heaters rarely have one; room heaters do.
- Look for a stated room size. Vague "heats any room" claims usually mean it heats none of them.
- Beware USB-powered "heaters". A USB port supplies a few watts — enough to warm your fingertips, nothing more.
