How to work out the heater size a small UK room actually needs, where to put it, and how to use one safely in a bedroom, office or bathroom.
Measure the room first
Multiply length by width in metres to get the floor area. A typical UK second bedroom is around 3 m × 3 m, so 9 m². A home office carved out of a box room is often 6 to 8 m². Knowing this one number prevents almost every sizing mistake.

Adjust upward if the room has a high ceiling, single glazing, an external door, or a wall that faces the prevailing wind. Adjust downward for a well-insulated modern room.
Where to put a plug-in heater
- Near where you sit, not in a far corner. Warm air spreads, but you feel the benefit sooner if you are in its path.
- Away from curtains, bedding and furniture. Leave clear space in front of the outlet and behind the intake.
- Straight into a wall socket. Avoid daisy-chained extension leads and multi-way adaptors carrying other high-power appliances.
- On a stable surface or in a socket at a sensible height so it cannot be knocked over or blocked.
Using a heater in a bedroom
Two things matter: noise and control. Look for quiet running and a timer, so the heater warms the room before bed and switches off rather than running all night. A thermostat means it will not overheat the room at 3am. Do not drape anything over a heater to dim its display — use a model whose display is acceptable to you in the first place.
Bathrooms and damp rooms
UK wiring regulations restrict what can be used in bathroom zones near a bath or shower. The safe approach with a portable plug-in heater is to warm the bathroom before you use it, with the heater plugged in outside the splash zones, and never to handle it with wet hands. Always follow the instructions supplied with your specific heater.
Children, pets and safety features
Choose overheat protection with automatic shut-off, a housing that stays cool to the touch, and if the heater is free-standing, a tip-over cut-off. Keep the flex out of walkways and out of reach of a puppy that chews.

- Close the door — you halve the space you are heating.
- Draught-proof the door and window before you buy a bigger heater.
- Set a temperature you actually want and let the thermostat hold it.
- Use the timer for a defined window rather than "on all evening".
